Banana for your Emotional Support Animal

One of the biggest questions I am asked is ‘What Foods Can Dogs Eat?’.

I

In this post we look at the foods which are good for dogs and are ok for dogs to eat as treats. In part 2 'Foods that are Harmful for Dogs' we’ll take a look at the foods dogs should definitely avoid!

Foods That Are Safe For Dogs To Eat

So you’re eating your dinner and your little friend is sat quietly next to your chair giving you those puppy dog eyes and you simply cannot resist giving them a little scrap of food from your plate. You may be surprised to know however that some of the food we eat is also good for our dogs. It can really boost their health if  you add it to their regular dog food diet.

Apples

Apples are a lovely crunchy treat for your dog. They are also a great source of vitamins A and C as well as fibre. The pips are harmful to dogs however as they contain cyanide, so make sure you remove the core.

Bananas

Yes Dogs can eat bananas Just like humans, bananas are beneficial for your dog's digestion. They are packed full of vitamins B6 and C, fibre and potassium. With their high sugar content they are a great treat for working dogs too and keep their energy levels up, but if your dog isn’t that active simply keep bananas as a special treat.

Blueberries

Low in fat and high in fibre and Vitamin C, blueberries are a wonderful treat for your dog. Studies have shown the blueberries can help fight conditions like heart disease and cancer in dogs. As with any fruit they should be given in small amounts and as a treat to accompany their regular diet.

Cheese

Cheese is a great treat, but make sure your pooch is not lactose intolerant first before feeding them lots of the stuff. If you are not sure just give him or her a tiny amount and see how they react. When looking for cheese always go for low fat options, cottage cheese or Ricotta are both really great. Cheddar on the other hand is very high in fat so limit the amount you give your dog otherwise they will pile on the pounds.

Cooked Chicken

Cooked chicken is a good way to get extra protein into your dog's diet, and without the skin it is a really healthy option. Avoid giving chicken bones though as they can get stuck in your dog's throat.

Eggs

Again eggs are another great protein booster for your dog’s diet and they are a healthy snack. Dogs can eat eggs raw and the shell is also very nutritious, but there is some debate about salmonella poisoning, so to avoid these risks, just hard boil them.

Melon

Packed full of Vitamin C and B6, potassium and fibre melon makes a super healthy snack for your canine friend. Cantaloupe and water-melon are probably best, but remember to remove the pips from the water melon. Studies have shown that cantaloupe melon can help prevent cataracts.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal has high levels of fibre which can help prevent constipation and high cholesterol as well as reduce the risk of heart disease. It is especially good for senior dogs, as it helps with digestion and promotes a healthy colon.

Peanut Butter

I haven’t found a dog yet who doesn’t like peanut butter, and the good news is that it is safe for dogs, and a wonderful treat. It is a great source of good fats, protein and Vitamins B and E. Always look for a natural or organic peanut butter that has no added salt or sugar.

Pumpkin

Good for diarrhoea and constipation it is loaded with fibre, and vitamin A. However too much vitamin A can be bad for dogs though so only give a couple of spoonfuls.

Cooked Salmon

Oily fish is full of Omega 3, which is great for our skin, but it is also good for your dogs coat and their general health. Give them some salmon skins or cooked salmon, but remember to remove any bones first.

Yoghurt

A good source of protein and calcium yoghurt is a great food for your dog. Look out for one which has no sugar or artificial sweeteners. If your doggy is a little overweight look for fat free varieties which are also free from all fat substitutes.
